“Shaun Gibson and Doug Ward on the back of a catastrophic startup failure in 2010 found themselves in a sufficiently recovered position at the start of 2012 to begin the rebuild of their startup. When having first attempted the venture in 2008 they’d up sticks and moved to Sydney Australia to build the prototype as they felt at the time there wasn’t a compelling enough reason to remain in the UK from an established startup community stand point. Given this willingness to move where needed in the best interests of their startup and being based in Manchester in Jan of 2012 they asked themselves the question “Where is the best place to base your startup in the UK?”. The media at the time and to date quite understandably had a very much London centric focus in terms of the East London’s ‘Silicon Roundabout’ cluster and upon looking found there was no shortage of information in relation to the East London cluster, one such resource being the Tech City Map. It was out of frustration with the difficulty encountered when trying to gain a similar perspective on other clusters around the UK and also having been inspired by the TechCityMap that Shaun and Doug decided to take action into their own hands and create a TechCityMap for the whole of the UK. Thus Tech Britain came into existence in the spring of 2012. It should be noted at this point in time they were two very broke startup guys so certainly not flush for cash in order to carry out a project such as Tech Britain, however they resolved that in order to do it justice and best represent each of the clusters identified, they would need to visit them and meet with the various influencers/founders who made up the ecosystems.
Through initial research and out of a desire to challenge the corollary that you needed to be based in East London in order to have a success, one of Tech Britain’s core aims was to highlight the fact that it is possible to build a successful startup within your locality in the hope of encouraging the retention of talent. It was decided that one good way to initially do this was through conducting video interviews with the various ecosystem influencers so as to humanize each of the clusters and find out what their perspective is on their community.
Tech Britain kicked off in May 2012 with what became a 13 week tour facilitated through the extensive use of Megabuses and Couchsurfing.org, encompassing Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle, Belfast, Londonderry, Newry, Birmingham, Cardiff, Exeter, Bath, Bristol, London and Manchester. A further two tours were later undertaken in order to add Cambridge, Dundee, Brighton, Sheffield, Leeds & Liverpool. To date Tech Britain has received been bootstrapped or rather busstrapped to get it to where it is.
Our aim is to do the best job possible by each of the clusters we represent and ultimately highlight the amazing things that are happening all over the United Kingdom. As it’s not just a Tech City after all, it’s Tech Britain…”
