Arquitectura Viva 175 EXPO MILANO 2015
FEEDING THE PLANET, ENERGY FOR LIFE
PIANO’S WHITNEY MUSEUM · H&DEM’S BORDEAUX STADIUM · CHASLIN ON LE CORBUSIER · MONEO IN PAMPLONA AND AMID.CERO9 IN MADRID · DOSSIER: MODERN HERITAGE
In Short. The new Whitney Museum, a work of Renzo Piano, opens in New York; Herzog & de Meuron complete their new stadium for F.C. Girondins in Bordeaux; the Egyptian government makes plans to build a new capital; and François Chaslin writes on the controversy sparked by his book Un Corbusier.
Feeding the Planet. So goes the motto of the Universal Exposition that has opened in Milan, to remain on view until 31 October, with the mission of enlightening the public at large on one of the great problems our societies face today: how to feed the 9 billion people the Earth will have, predictions say, by the year 2050. But without a doubt, apart from this highly relevant and urgent program Expo Milano 2015 is an architectural fair graced by 55 national pavilions and 41 theme-based ones organized along two grand axes inspired in the cardus and decumanus of ancient Roman military camps. We take stock of it through two in-depth articles mapping Milan’s urban trans- formation in the last decade and describing the Expo constructions, followed by a full feature of twelve selected pavilions; Spain’s with its pair of roofs; the United Kingdom’s with its ethereal installation; France’s with its timber belly; Italy’s with its decontaminating facade; Austria’s with its artificial forest; Brazil’s with its passable topography; Chile’s with its lattice structure; Japan’s with its traditional wall; China’s with its bamboo shingles; the United Arab Emirates’ with its ceramic walls; the firm Vanke’s with its terracotta scales; and Slow Food’s with its basic section. Wrapping up the coverage is an article on the cultural dimensions of food.
Educating and Collecting. Two unique buildings called upon to house two important pedagogical and artistic institutions have opened at the same time: the new headquarters of the Francisco Giner de los Ríos Foundation in Madrid, a project of Cristina Díaz Moreno and Efrén García Grinda; and the Museum University of Navarra in Pamplona, a work of Rafael Moneo.
A Mosaic of Cases. Luis Fernández-Galiano reviews the Spanish edition of Modern Architecture Through Case Studies, by Peter Blundell Jones. Plus: Taschen monographs on Renzo Piano and Bjarke Ingels, a revision of futurism in the context of the modern city; and reflections on the culture of dwelling from the angle of modernity’s emblematic homes.
Dossier: Modern Heritage. Unprecedented from a theoretical and prac- tical point of view, the problems generated by the restoration of modernity’s iconic buildings are making it possible to reinterpret the Modern Movement with more objective criteria. This is discussed in detail by the specialist David Rivera in an article which is followed by a selection of three recently restored historical constructions: the Gothenburg City Hall, with the enlargement ex- ecuted by Erik Gunnar Asplund in 1936; the Viipuri Library, raised by Alvar Aalto in 1935; and the Schocken Department Store in Chemnitz, a work carried out by Eric Mendelsohn in the year 1930.
To close, the sociologists Gilles Lipovetsky and Jean Serroy explain the city aestheticization process that is natural to advanced capitalism.
