Many words come immediately to mind when talking about the architecture of Marc Barani: rigor, simplicity, effectiveness, power, archaism, respect to the landscape…
We will only retain three that -complementing each other- allow us to describe this career quite precisely. It is a career that, despite being apparently part of the white modernity, involves radical breaks. Territory, mass, infrastructure: three relatively exclusive words. Because the territory is not the city and lets us see beyond the urban space. The mass is not the object to which modern architects had accustomed us: it carries something deeply neutral.
As for infrastructure, more fundamental and secret, it is buried in a network and operates a first determination of the space upstream, allowing for the emergence of structures and volumes.
These three words also bring out our world of today: a world where the concept of ‘landscape affected by the metropolis’ has replaced that of urban form. A ‘globalized’ world in which everything needs to aim for a critical inertia that shall give them some visibility, in order to simply exist facing immensity. A world consisting on moving rather than staying, than rooting…
