Product Description
Arquitectura Viva 154 HOUSES AS SHELTERS
Dwelling in Times of Crisis. The house is a refuge to live in, but also one to work in during hard times. This double function is shared by the works selected here: ten houses spread throughout Spain and executed mostly by young practices. The tour begins with a dwelling raised by Irisarri & Piñera in Tomiño, in southern Galicia, over the ruins of a farm construction. It con- tinues with two situated on the outskirts of Madrid that have gone up using industrialized systems: the MO House by FRPO in Aravaca and the House of Would by Elii in Pedrezuela. The journey then leads north to Navarre with the MP House by Alcolea + Tárrago, whose enclosure of reinforced concrete opens on to views over the Ebro Valley. We move on to Catalonia with the ceramic Bitxo House by Lagula Arquitectes, built on a hill in the Barcelona Pre-Pyrenees, and the Porch House by Bosch & Capdeferro, where the massive walls of a masía coexist with the light skin of an extension that looks on to the landscape of Gerona’s La Garrotxa region. From Catalonia we sail to Mallorca for the Lluís i N’Eulàlia House by TEd’A Arquitectes, an introverted structure put up with traditional materials and techniques. The itinerary ends with three buildings in eastern Spain; the Alien House by Noname 29, executed on the coast of Alicante and the result of reorganiz- ing the space enclosed within walls of a traditional dwelling; the Machine Home by Adhoc, an inhabited mechanism that colonizes a Murcian vegetable garden; and finally, also in Murcia, the wooden House for Three Sisters that Blancafort & Reus have carried out in Bullas.
Trio of Events. Marseille in 2013 is the European Capital of Culture, and this has partly transformed the fabric of the city by colonizing it with a wide range of architectural works described here by François Chaslin. For their part, Mauricio Vicent writes on the exhibition ‘Moving. Norman Foster in Art’ and Richard Ingersoll takes stock of the 55th Venice Biennale.
Crossing Traditions. Richard Ingersoll himself has recently published World Architecture A cross – Cultural History, a global approach to the history of architecture with a social and relativistic focus. Besides this, essays on the domestic utopia of Alison and Peter Smithson, poché composition and the interaction of art and architecture from the perspective of time.
Innovation in Detail. Built in 1845 and devastated by fire shortly afterwards, the Lisbon’s Thalia Theater has been in ruins for 150 years. Gonçalo Byrne, Patricia Barbas and Diogo S. Lopes have now turned it into a multipurpose center where the historic remains go side by side with an enlargement characterized by the at once minimalist and powerful use of reinforced concrete. An article on this exceptional work is followed by one on Diogene, an experimental cabin designed by Renzo Piano. Ending the section is a text on translucent concrete, a case study of the application of this material, a description of the hollow vaults of Amancio Williams and a presentation of other new products.
To close, Luis Fernández-Galiano analyzes the recent uprisings of the middle class that have taken place in several cities of Brazil and Turkey.
