In Short. Zaha Hadid dies at 65, at the peak of her career; Rafael Moneo wins Spain’s National Award for Architecture; the fashion house Fendi appropriates a mythical work, the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana in the EUR district; the first stone is laid at the construction site of the National Library of Israel by Herzog & de Meuron; and the Serpentine Gallery chooses BIG for this year’s summer pavilion.
Spanish Landscapes. New ways of regarding public space and landscapes in Spain are illustrated in this issue with twelve recent examples located across the Iberian Peninsula. The architect Fernando Rodríguez comments on these interventions and classifies them into four groups: lines, supports, scenes, and artifices. In Málaga, Luis Machuca refurbishes an old industrial workers’ walkway called the Caminito del Rey; in Alicante, Eduardo de Miguel creates a course along the coastline; and in Elche, Grupo Aranea builds crisscrossing footbridges over the river. Then, Pablo Gallego restores the river beach area of Goián; Zigzag Arquitectura creates for Santander a hybrid space that serves as a square, a grandstand, and a park; and Abalo Alonso turns some ruins in Santiago de Compostela into urban orchards. In the third bloc, CH+QS gives Almazán two new lookouts over the Duero which relate the plaza to the river; Noemi Martínez reorganizes and enlarges a square in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat; and OOIIO exalts the ceramic craft of Talavera de la Reina. Finally, in Cehegín, CómoCrearHistorias connects two urban zones by means of a garden; in Zaragoza, F. Elorza + F. Ramírez raises two acoustic barriers; and in Cuenca, Izaskun Chinchilla comes up with a lyrical revamping of a castle in ruins.
Masters of the Oblique. Richard Ingersoll goes through the work of the recently demised Iraqi-born British architect Zaha Hadid, praising the experimental and avant-garde nature of her buildings; and François Chaslin does the same for the French master Claude Parent, also now gone, theorist of ‘oblique function’ and controversial figure of French architecture.
Classical Beauty. Luis Fernández-Galiano writes on recent exhibitions in Milan, London, and Madrid which have revived interest in classical sculpture. Also: a book where Georges Teyssot criticizes modernity; a tribute to Carlos Sambricio, professor of architectural history; a work on urban exploration; and a reflection on the concept of ‘construction.’
Dossier: Stone. The adaptation of natural stone to architectural codes is not immediate, but its firm symbolic and aesthetic value, accompanied by its excellent thermal properties, makes it an eternal material. David Sanz explains the historical and current characteristics of construction with stone, in an article followed by three examples: the entry into the city and the new parliament that the Italian architect Renzo Piano has built in Valletta, capital of Malta; the apartment blocks that have been raised by the British David Chipperfield in the Chinese city of Hangzhou; and the mixed-use tower erected by the Swiss Max Dudler in Munich.
To close, José María Exquiaga upholds participatory urbanism over the notion of planning as a mere technical matter.
