Arquitectura Viva 200 Two Hundred
An Accidental Canon, 1967-2017
Dossier: Operable Facades
In Short. Arquitectura Viva publishes issue number 200; the Guggenheim Bilbao turns 20; Foster completes Bloomberg’s London headquarters; MVRDV opens a library in the Chinese city of Tianjin; Perrault will raise a station in Gangnam, Seoul; Adjaye designs a Holocaust Memorial in London; wHY wins the competition for the Ross Pavilion in Edinburgh; the CSCAE bestows the National Prize for Architecture on the Royal Collections Museum in Madrid by Tuñón & Mansilla and on the Convention Center in Palma by Mangado; dRMM win the Stirling Prize; RCR build the Malecaze House in Toulouse; and Rafael Moneo and Kenneth Frampton talk about the challenges of architecture today.
The Medium is the Message. Architecture is also the medium through which it is disseminated, to the point of one being hard put to distinguish the content from the transmitter, and the transmitter from the receiver, increasingly fed back into the ecosystem of the discipline. So Marshall McLuhan’s aphorism comes in handy in explaining the 200 elements that, on the occasion of the publication of issue 200 of Arquitectura Viva, we present here in four families, each one of them following a text by Luis Fernández-Galiano and illustrated with a diagram that also serves as a family tree. Under the heading ‘The Role of Thought,’ the first family lists fifty architecture books. The second family goes by the title ‘The Pulse of the Times,’ and names fifty magazines. Under ‘The Stage of the Story,’ the third presents fifty exhibitions. And the fourth family, headed by ‘The Eye of the Camera,’ gives a selection of fifty films and photographers.
From Ceramic to Color. We celebrate two centenaries: that of the birth of Eladio Dieste, whose oeuvre is analyzed by the historian Joaquín Medina Warmburg through his masterpiece, the Church of Christ the Worker in Altántida; and that of the creation of De Stijl, which Luis Fernández-Galiano addresses by presenting writings and ideas on the art of the group’s founder.
Sesquicentennial Wright. Two books take stock of the figure of Frank Lloyd Wright through exhibitions. Also: a personal essay on architecture by Santiago de Molina, a history of the cartoon by Enrique Bordes, and two books by José Manuel García Roig, one on Leni Riefenstahl and the other on the relationship between film and architecture through the concept of the mise-en-scène.
Dossier: Operable Facades. Operable facades provide protection against the sun and winds, but they are also a sophisticated compositional mechanism that has always been used. This is the thesis defended by the professors Fernando Moral and Elena Merino in an article followed by feature of five examples where such systems play a central role: the residential block in Lorca (Spain) by MCEA and Naos 04, the apartments in Paris (France) by Chartier-Corbasson architects, the social housing complex, again in Paris, by Dietmar Feichtinger, the Escherpark building in Zurich (Switzerland) by E2A, and the rowing center in Lucerne (Switzerland) by Andreas Fuhrimann and Gabrielle Hächler,
To close, and inspired by Malraux’s ‘imaginary museum,’ Fernández-Galiano recalls the role of magazines as tools to disseminate and document architecture.
