Product Description
Arquitectura Viva 206 Animal Homes
The Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad holds its fifth biennial congress in Pamplona under the title ‘Less Architecture, More City’; master of journalists Tom Wolfe dies at 88; the Serpentine Gallery opens its summer pavilion, designed this time by Frida Escobedo; the winners of the sixtieth FAD awards are announced; David Chipperfield does surgery on the Royal Academy in London; Eduardo Souto de Moura gets the Biennale’s Golden Lion for best participation; Martínez Lapeña, Torres, and García renovate Gaudí’s Casa Vicens; Barozzi Veiga builds in Brunico, BAAS in Katowice, and TEd’Ain Orsonnens; and over three springtimes David Sebastián raises a house in a village of Teruel.
Spaces for Species. Addressing the needs of animals is a functionalist challenge but also a good opportunity to shed prejudices and explore forms and materials. This is well demonstrated in the ten examples selected for feature in this issue: the new Paris Zoological Park, by Bernard Tschumi; the enlargement and new aviary of Antwerp Zoo, by Studio Farris; the habitat for orangutans in Barcelona Zoo, by Forgas Arquitectes; the lemur exhibit in Melbourne Zoo, by OLA architecture; the equestrian ranch in the Mexican city of Puebla, by Manuel Cervantes; the stable for goats in the German municipality of Seubersdorf, by Kühnlein architektur; the enclosure for the ravens at the Tower of London, by Llowarch Llowarch Architects; the poultry farm in the Croatian village of Rakov Potok, by SKROZ; the insect community in El Masnou, by Batlle i Roig; and the beehive in Oslo, by Snøhetta.
Another Biennale. The critic and historian Richard Ingersoll gives a detailed presentation of the most prominent pavilions at the Venice Architecture Biennale, which opened in May, while the editor Cynthia Davidson makes an analysis of one of the leading installations on view: ‘Vatican Chapels,’ curated by Francesco Dal Co.
Bound Histories. Luis Fernández-Galiano reviews the sixth volume of The Complete Works of Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron. Also: a monograph on the New York studio WORKac, a publication on ornaments in the work of Neutelings Riedijk, a history of modern architecture in 20th-century Vienna, and an essay on the scientific illustrations of Fritz Kahn.
Dossier: Natural Lighting. Natural light has through the ages been a fundamental element in the material and symbolic construction of architecture. This is the thesis put forward by the specialist Juan M. Medina del Río in a history-oriented article. It is followed by three selected new buildings – located on three continents – in which natural lighting takes center stage: the Hakka Indenture Museum in Dadongba (China) by the local firm DnA; the Terreno House, built three hours from Mexico City by Fernanda Canales; and ‘Writ in Water,’ a monument to the Magna Carta in Runnymede (United Kingdom), by Studio Octopi in collaboration with the artist Mark Wallinger.
To close, the powerful influence of cities on human and natural ecosystems suggests that we are living a new era, the ‘Urbanocene.’
