AV Proyectos 050 Lorca

On 11 May 2011, the city of Lorca, in Murcia, suffered a strong earthquake that killed nine people and caused huge material damage, forcing to rehouse 2,500 neighbors because over a thousand dwellings of 260 buildings had become unsafe. To address this situation, the CSCAE (Spanish Association of Architectural Institutes), together with the Lorca City Council, the Public Works Department of the region, the Murcia Institute of Architects and the Fundación Ars Civilis, called a competition to rebuild the two most affected quarters – La Viña and San Fernando. For emergency reasons, the competition seeked proposals based on modular and prefabricated systems that could be exported to other damaged areas, and that could serve as ‘model projects for Lorca’s future reconstruction’. Of the fourteen projects that participated in the second phase the jury selected a winner and two mentions for each neighborhood, commending the proposals for their versatility, their Mediterranean character and their respect for the identity of the town.

In 2003 the Ministry of Development launched an architectural competition to restore the fortress that lends its name to Castillo de Garcimuñoz, a small town in the province of Cuenca, located near the A-3 highway. The many alterations carried out over a Muslim fortress since the 10th century, when the villa was established, transformed the castle into residence, fortified town and cemetery. The winning project, drawn up by Izaskun Chinchilla and currently under construction, is conceived as an insertion of autonomous parts that have a triple objective: to consolidate the existing building and prevent its further decay; to make some spaces of the old structures accessible; and to introduce new cultural uses. Foreseeing a greater influx of visitors during holiday periods, the usable floor area is almost 2,000 square meters, including the ruins located under the parade ground. However, only 250 square meters are heated, sufficient to attend the neighbors’ needs during the winter while significantly reducing the yearly maintenance costs.

El 11 de mayo de 2011, la localidad murciana de Lorca sufrió un fuerte seísmo que se cobró la vida de nueve personas, causó numerosos daños materiales y obligó a realojar a 2.500 vecinos, dejando inhabitables más de mil viviendas de 260 edificios. Ante esta situación, el Consejo Superior de Colegios de Arquitectos de España (CSCAE) junto al Ayuntamiento, la Consejería de Obras Públicas de la Comunidad Autónoma, el Colegio de Arquitectos de Murcia y la Fundación Ars Civilis, convocó un concurso para reconstruir los dos barrios más afectados —La Viña y San Fernando—. Por razones de emergencia, se buscaban propuestas basadas en sistemas modulares o prefabricados exportables a otros barrios dañados, y que sirvieran como «proyecto piloto para la futura reconstrucción de Lorca». De entre los catorce proyectos que concurrían a la segunda fase del concurso, el jurado seleccionó, para cada barrio, uno ganador y dos mencionados, destacando en todos ellos su versatilidad, el carácter mediterráneo de las construcciones y su respeto a la identidad del pueblo.

En 2003 el Ministerio de Fomento convocó un concurso de ideas para restaurar la fortaleza que da nombre a Castillo de Garcimuñoz, un pequeño municipio conquense situado en el kilómetro 156 de la autovía A-3. Las modificaciones llevadas a cabo desde la fundación de la villa en el siglo X sobre una alcazaba musulmana convirtieron el castillo en residencia, plaza fuerte y cementerio. El proyecto ganador del concurso, firmado por Izaskun Chinchilla y actualmente en fase de ejecución, se concibe como una implantación de piezas autónomas que persiguen un triple objetivo: consolidar la obra existente evitando su deterioro; convertir en accesibles algunas estancias de las antiguas edificaciones; e introducir nuevos usos de carácter cultural. Suponiendo una afluencia turística mayor en los periodos vacacionales, la superficie útil visitable es de casi 2.000 metros cuadrados —incluyendo las ruinas situadas bajo el patio de armas— de los cuales sólo 250 de espacio climatizado, lo que permite minimizar costes la mayor parte del año.
