DOSSIER FRANCISCO MANGADO · HERZOG & DE MEURON, NEW BORDEAUX STADIUM · EQUIPO CRÓNICA IN BILBAO · S HOUSES, VO TRONG NGHIA · EDWIN SMITH · MUMBAI MUSEUM COMPETITION
The latest issue of AV Proyectos gathers the international works of Francisco Mangado: including cultural and residential projects in France and Switzerland, a learning center in Equatorial Guinea, and a cultural complex in China. The competitions section focuses on the The Mumbai City Museum expansion, where Steven Holl’s proposal was chosen over those of Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid, Pei Cobb Freed, Studio Mumbai and Nieto Sobejano. The issue also features three prototypes for low-cost houses that are part of the experimental S House project, developed by the Vietnamese studio Vo Trong Nghia. The construction section analyzes in detail the new Bordeaux Stadium, recently inaugurated by Herzog & de Meuron. To close, a piece on the retrospective exhibition devoted by the Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts to the work of the Valencian Equipo Crónica, active during the last years of Franco’s regime and the early stages of democratic transition; and the photography section, covering the work of Edwin Smith, whose scenes of the everyday are a faithful reflection of 20th-century British society.

With prominent works to his name like the Baluarte in Pamplona, the Congress Center of Ávila, the Archaeological Museum of Vitoria, the Spanish Pavilion for Expo Zaragoza 2008, or the Museum of Fine Arts in Oviedo, the new projects by Francisco Mangado (Estella, 1957) increase the presence abroad of the Pamplona-based office. In France and Switzerland the studio is working on cultural and residential proposals; in Equatorial Guinea it is developing a university building; and in China it has won the competition to build a large cultural complex. The dossier reflects the architect’s continued interest in the place, culture and landscape, with commitment and constructive rigor as permanent principles.
Steven Holl will extend the Mumbai City Museum. Also known as Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, it was built at the end of the 19th century and recently underwent restoration, obtaining the 2005 UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Award of Excellence for Conservation. The proposal by the New York-based architect, winner in the first international competition for a public buil- ding in the Indian city, was chosen over those of AL_A, Nieto Sobejano, Pei Cobb Freed, Studio Mumbai, wHY, and Zaha Hadid. The new wing will take up between 8,000 and 10,000 m2 and will house, aside from exhibition spaces, an inter- pretation center, a library, an archive, archive preservation infrastructures, shop and cafeteria.
Initiated in 2012 in the Mekong delta area, south of Vietnam, the S House project is set forth with the purpose of providing low-cost houses to low- income families. With this objective in mind, the studio established in 2006 by the Vietnamese Vo Trong Nghia – with offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi –, has developed a series of prototypes in search of greater stability and comfort, using, to the extent possible, replace- able, affordable and locally sourced materials, as well as passive design methods and assem- bly systems where the user intervenes. Aside from providing the essential space for living, future designs may also be adapted to other uses: schools, health centers, etc.
Herzog & de Meuron. New Bordeaux Stadium
Located in the quarter of Bordeaux-Lac to the north of Bordeaux, the new stadium – which will become the home of the FC Girondins – seats a maximum of 42.000 spectators, with a football pitch of 68 x 105 meters that can be extended for rugby games, concerts and other shows. The project reinterprets the three fundamen- tal elements of a stadium: the bowl, the con- course, transitional element between the field and the surroundings, and the overall appear- ance. These three criteria are adapted to the specific conditions of the site, and combined to achieve functionality and a strong identity. The stadium’s inauguration is in May 2015, and it will host five Euro 2016 matches.
