AV Proyectos 79 Dossier Jean Nouvel
Dossier Jean Nouvel. Six Projects
From the Arab World Institute in Paris to the Louvre that he is now finishing in Abu Dhabi, Jean Nouvel (Fumel, 1945) has built, over more than thirty years of career, noteworthy buildings across the world – in Spain the Agbar Tower and the Reina Sofía Museum extension. While the interplay of lights, shadows, and transpar- encies are a constant in his oeuvre, the 2008 Pritzker Prize laureate defends a specific architecture; without a predetermined style, in each project he applies different strategies depending on the context at hand. With offices in Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Geneva, and Rome, his 150-strong team is currently working on more than thirty works in several countries.
Grand Paris Express. Metro Stations
The need to minimize transport time and address the considerable increase in number of passengers in the Paris subway led to the approval in 2011 of the Grand Paris Express: a completely automated metro network connecting the whole region and including the city’s three airports and ten business centers. The project to service two million travelers daily involves stretching two lines, building four new ones with 200 kilometers and constructing 68 new stations, of which nine are considered emblematic due to their relevance within the scheme. The following section features the plans for four of these, designed by BIG, Kengo Kuma, EMBT, and Dominique Perrault.
Eight Timber Buildings
The variety of types found in the eight projects featured in this dossier reflects the multiple uses of the material with which they are all built: wood. The following pages analyze the key points in a series of works that includes a summer house wrapped in a mobile enclosure, a housing block designed entirely in wood, two large pavilions – a temporary one based on a triangular grid and another permanent one with a faceted roof –, two projects for children – a playground area with circular roofs and a kindergarten of trapezoidal modules –, a library that shows its interior pine wood structure, and an engineering workshop made of stacked blocks.
Bjarke Ingels Group. Amager Resource Center / ARC
The port of Amager Island, on the outskirts of Copenhagen, has over the years become a magnet for enthusiasts of extreme sports. The team directed by Bjarke Ingels (Copenhagen, 1974) is building in this industrial area what’s considered to be the country’s main environmental initiative of recent years: a waste treatment and energy production plant that replaces the existing one, and turns its roof into an artificial ski slope of over 31,000 square meters. The innovative building also includes a chimney stack that will project the collective carbon dioxide footprint in the sky in the form of a steam ring to raise awareness among citizens of the environmental impact of consumption.
Photography of Models
Photography of building models brings together two architectural representation systems to express what a project wants to become. Its importance as graphic element, as dissemina- tion tool, and its documentary value as bearer of a legacy that has sometimes disappeared are all reflected in the exhibition ‘Modelling for the Camera.’ Curated by Iñaki Bergera, the show gathers more than one hundred images by photographers like Català-Roca, Pando, Francisco Gómez, Masat…, or by the architects themselves – Sert, Fisac, Asís Cabrero, De la Sota, Higueras, García de Paredes… – carried out between 1925 and 1970, and offers a unique journey through modern Spanish architecture.
Kai Caemmerer. Disjointed Realism
The American artist Kai Caemmerer invites, through his work, to reflect on the urban space, the continuous growth of cities, and the relationship of photography with both: how photography can decipher landscapes, transform ordinary scenes into something complex or provocative, or reveal invisible stories. Born in 1988, the photographer currently lives and works in Los Angeles, after studying in Washington and Chicago. It was a trip to China that inspired his ‘Unborn Cities’ series, where he captures new but still empty constructions. These images, as those of his other series ‘Sites,’ show scenes where reality and fiction blend in a mysterious and unexpected way.
