AV Proyectos 86 Dossier MVRDV
MVRDV. Density and Utopia
The Dutch studio MVRDV, founded by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and Nathalie de Vries 25 years ago, has been characterized since its inception for not conforming to the conventional and for its propositive approach. Today its prolific and varied work invites us to imagine a different world in which the barriers between public and private, building and landscape, frame and activity, urbanism and architecture are diffused. Each project is addressed at all scales, from urban organization to detail design, conceiving each building as a tool to activate the environment in which it is inserted, and embracing density, hybridization of uses, typological diversity, and color as ornament.
Foster + Partners. Narbo Via
Known for its rich historic and artistic heritage, Narbonne, founded by Romans in 118 BC, was once a major port. Today it is a vibrant city, with an impressive legacy of buildings, ancient relics, and archaeological sites. At the gates of the city, next to the Canal de la Robine, the office of Norman Foster is building the Musée de la Romanité, organized according to a scheme of pure lines that combines structural insulated rammed earth walls (SIREWALLS) with a framework of prefabricated concrete beams for the roof. With galleries for permanent and temporary exhibitions, the building, slated for completion in 2019, is set out to become a new cultural hub in the city.
