Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra. Respect and Rupture
With a career spanning more than 30 years ded- icated to architecture and teaching, Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra (Seville, 1945) is the author of an extensive, rigorous, and coherent production that includes works as relevant as the Navigation Pavilion at the Seville Expo in 1992, the recovery of the San Telmo Palace, the Congress Center, or the CaixaForum – all of them in Seville –, the Museum of Underwater Archaeology of Cartagena, the Sea Museum in Genoa, or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg. This dossier covers his latest projects, which combine respect for pre-existence and genius loci with measured gestures of rupture and contrast to enhance their value.
David Chipperfield Architects. James Simon Galerie
Between Kupfergraben Canal and the west facade of the Neues Museum, on the Museum Island of Berlin, David Chipperfield is building the James Simon Galerie, which will mark the new entrance to the complex. The building, with a strong articulating character, organizes an access to the main floor of the Pergamon Museum via a large open staircase, while from the basement – with spaces for temporary exhibitions and an auditorium – it guides visitors to the Archaeological Promenade, which connects the four archaeological museums of the island. To integrate the new piece in the site, the project resorts to stone and to elements of its architectural language, such as the colonnades.
Competition in Saint-Malo
Kengo Kuma will build the new Museum of Maritime History of Saint-Malo – an emblematic port and walled-in city in the northwest of Brittany, and one of the most popular destinations in this French region. The proposal delivered by the Japanese studio, initially proclaimed winner ex aequo with that of the Barcelona studio Barozzi Veiga, was the one chosen in the last verdict, both ahead of the other two shortlisted projects, by the Lisbon-based Aires Mateus and the Paris firm Moreau Kusunoki. The new building will be located outside the city walls, on the Duguay-Trouin Dock, and will include a program for permanent and temporary exhibitions, educational activities and events.
Museo de Arte Reina Sofía
The Reina Sofía Museum offers a tour of the Russian avant-garde art produced during the heyday of Dada – between World War I and Lenin’s death –, exploring the features both movements share, such as the negation of classical art, the innovative fusion between the visual and the verbal, the extravagant performances, and the anti-war campaigns. With a selection of almost 500 works by 90 artists, including El Lissitzky, Kazimir Malévich, and Vladimir Tatlin, and abundant multimedia material – photographs, publications, films, and audios –, the exhibition reveals the politi- cal implications of the movement and its use of denial, irony, and absurdity.
Yiorgis Yerolymbos. Memory and Anticipation
The work of the photographer and architect Yiorgis Yerolymbos (Paris, 1973) reflects a particular interest in landscape and how it is transformed by humans. He has spent ten years documenting the construction of the Cultural Center of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, an arts, education, and entertainment complex built by Renzo Piano in Athens. The images captured by the photographer from the top of the cranes are collected in the book Orthographs, taking by title the name that Leon Battista Alberti gave architectural representations in plan drawn to guide the construction of the buildings, differentiating them from paintings with purely aesthetic purposes.
