José María Sánchez García. Precise Gesture
José María Sánchez (Don Benito, Badajoz, 1975), architect by the ETSA of Madrid, teaches at his alma mater and also at the Mendrisio Academy. He founded his studio in Madrid in 2006, and soon won a number of competitions that would materialize in his best known works: the adaptation of the environment of the Temple of Diana in Mérida, the Rowing Center in Alange, and the Sports Technification Center ‘El Anillo’ in Guijo de Granadilla. His architecture, characterised by precise gestures and structural sincerity, pure geometries and marked rhythms, remains respectful to the existing and to heritage, and has earned him, among other distinctions, the BSI Swiss Architectural Award in 2014.
Southbank Tower. Competition in Melbourne
The Dutch firm UNStudio and the Australian office Cox Architecture will build the Southbank Tower, a skyscraper of 356 meters in the center of Melbourne, and which will become Australia’s tallest. The proposal won the contest called by Beulah International, and was chosen over those of the other five finalists: the Danish team BIG, the Austrian firm Coop Himmelb(l)au, the Chinese studio MAD, and two Dutch offices, MVRDV and OMA. The building, named Green Spine, is conceived as a conceptual extension of Southbank Boulevard, a ‘vertical city’ of 220,000 square meters with apartments, offices, hotel, retail, cultural facilities, and public green spaces.
Pavilions. Four Details
Far from being minor works, pavilions are useful tools to connect formal research with the functional and material reality. The design of such structures offers an opportunity to experiment with new techniques and ways of dwelling. Plastic, aluminum, concrete, and fabric are some of the most usual resources in this type of construction, with a broad spectrum of applications that continues to expand with innovative approaches. The following pages gather a few examples, such as an enclosure of polyethylene threads sown to a metallic skeleton, an intri- cate self-bearing shell of thin aluminum sheets, a sculptural matrix of concrete petals, and a floating canopy that adapts to the weather.
Barozzi Veiga. Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts
The new Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts of Lausanne is located next to the train station of the Swiss city. The project transforms the old locomotive depot and its surroundings to reactivate the area with a combination of public space and cultural program. Designed by the Barcelona studio of Fabrizio Barozzi and Alberto Veiga, the new building stands as a monolithic volume parallel to the tracks, replacing the existing one but retaining elements of great historical value such as the central space, which is converted into a spectacular entrance hall. Its characteristic atmosphere is also preserved by using forms and materials that refer to the industrial past of the place.
Zaha Hadid in New York. Pop-Up Gallery
The temporary exhibition displays projects and designs in a 186-square-meter space at the base of the building by ZHA next to the High Line in New York. The show covers the work of the architect – who passed away in 2016 – since its beginnings in the 1970s, as well as the current projects of her London office. Throughout her career, Hadid explored design and materiality on all scales, applying the same concepts to furniture design, fashion, and jewelry, which led her to set up Zaha Hadid Design in 2006, collaborating with manufacturers and craftspeople. Aside from design objects, the exhibition features photographs by Hélène Binet and a series of ‘Silver Models’ representing key projects.
Aitor Ortiz.
With space, architecture, and the object as starting point, the photographs of Aitor Ortiz (Bilbao, 1971) invite spectators to observe from a different perspective, free from the limitations imposed by a specific context or landscape. The exhibition ‘La memoria trazadora’ at the University of Navarre Museum collects 140 works carried out since the mid- 1990s until today. With more than 80 images which had never been displayed before, the show proposes to reflect on the ambiguities of representation and on the mechanisms for their interpretation through visual games, and on the role of photography as a creative, and not just documentary, tool.

The first monograph that AV devotes to the Dutch covers his latest period, focused on heritage, history and ecology, and presents buildings carried out by his Rotterdam office since 2000, the year Koolhaas picked up the Pritzker Prize. With an essay and twelve critical texts by Luis Fernández-Galiano, the monograph includes buildings completed by the studio over the last fifteen years: starting with the Prada Epicenter in New York and closing with the Fondazione Prada recently inaugurated in Milan, the issue also features emblematic buildings like the Dutch Embassy in Berlin, the Seattle Central Library, the Casa da Música in Porto or the CCTV in Beijing, and recent openings like De Rotterdam or the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow. Furthermore, ten projects in three different continents – among them the Taipei Performing Arts Center, the Musée National des Beaux-Arts of Quebec or the Axel Springer Campus in Berlin – take stock of the growing international presence of the Rotterdam studio, which has set up offices also in New York, Hong Kong, Doha and Dubai.
