Sergison Bates. Place and Design
Both born in London in 1964, Jonathan Sergison and Stephen Bates founded their studio in their home city in 1996, and in 2010 they also set up a second office in Zurich. Professors in Mendrisio (Sergison) and Munich (Bates), they are known mainly for their research in the field of residential construction, but their range of projects also includes urban planning and public buildings. Their collaborative approach has taken them to work with different European offices on projects characterized by their sensitive approach to the context, their development of the experiential potential of materials, and the concern for environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
World Car Center. Competition in Vigo
The Navarrese studio Vaillo+Irigaray has won the competition organized by Zona Franca de Vigo (Free Trade Zone) for the construction of the World Car Center, a complex that includes two new buildings and the intervention in an existing residential block next to Balaídos Stadium. With an investment of 14 million euros, the center is set to become the new icon of the automobile industry in Vigo, and will hold the headquarters of the accelerator of automotive companies, the Business Factory Auto (BFA), and the new incubator of the sector, High Tech Auto. Among the 70 proposals submitted under anonymous mottoes, 15 were shortlisted, and the following pages present the top nine.
Bamboo in detail. Four Details
Bamboo grows mainly in hot and humid climates, and it is precisely in these environments where it can fully satisfy the hygrothermal needs of users, offering a low thermal storage capacity but a wide range of constructive solutions with cross ventilation. These factors turn it into a material for local use, with the resulting economic and ecological advantages which, in addition to its lightness and flexibility, permit building structures such as the four that this dossier collects: the pavilions designed for two international landscaping fairs in China and Taiwan, a sports building for a school complex in Thailand, and an ancillary facility in an archaeological site in Peru.
Zaha Hadid Architects. Bee’ah Headquarters
The new headquarters of the environmental and waste management company Bee’ha in Sharjah – capital of one of the seven emirates in the UAE – is designed like an array of dunes within its desert environment, protecting an inner oasis. The design by Zaha Hadid Architects won a competition called by the company in 2013, and the construction works are now nearing completion. The shape of the building – with a total area of 7,000 m2 on a plot of 90,000 m2 – has been optimized to respond to the prevailing winds and the intense sunlight, and seeks minimizing energy use as much in the construction process as in the daily use of the complex in the future.
Fernand Léger. IVAM
The IVAM, in collaboration with Tate Liverpool, presents ‘Fernand Léger and Modern Life,’ displaying more than forty paintings and drawings, aside from films, graphic designs, books, fabrics and a large-scale photomural he made togeth- er with Charlotte Perriand for the International Exposition of Paris in 1937. The exhibition shows the unique visual style of Léger, who depicted the intense energy of the Parisian metropolis of the early 20th century with a colorful and vibrant cubism. The exhibition analyzes his technical and thematic evolution and presents him as a socially and politically committed artist, for whom modern art was a vehicle for education and a means to improve the quality of life for all.
Richard Allenby-Pratt. Consumption & Abandoned
After starting out his career as a commercial photographer in London in 1989, Richard Allenby-Pratt moved to Dubai in 2000, where he began focussing on his artistic projects. In 2016 he returned to the United Kingdom but continued working regularly in the Middle East, particularly in the United Arab Emirates, where his interest in natural environments and human influence on them would trigger ‘Consumption’ and ‘Abandoned’. These two series respectively show the strange beauty of landscapes modi- fied by development, and the desolation of a dystopian future in which the financial bubble has exploded, spurring a human exodus and bequeathing abandoned buildings to animals.
