Miralles Tagliabue EMBT. Natural Approach
Founded in 1994 in Barcelona by Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, the studio EMBT has completed prominent works like Santa Caterina Market in Barcelona or the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. Since the premature death of Miralles in 2000, Tagliabue assumed the direction of the studio, which currently develops projects in Europe and also in China – with a second branch established in Shanghai in 2010. Their creative process is defined by its poetic approach and the attention to the context, history, and culture of each specific place. As a result they obtain buildings and places strongly connected to the genius loci of where they are implanted, formally inspired by nature.
Museo de Bellas Artes. Competition in Bilbao
The proposal submitted by Norman Foster with Luis María Uriarte was selected as winner in the competition to renew the Bilbao Museum of Fine Arts, which planned to refurbish 2,250 square meters of its facilities and extend them with at least 5,140 square meters of new space, preserving the two existing buildings. The winning project, chosen over those of the other five finalists, places an open and flexible gallery over the current volumes. Under this striated piece, Plaza Arriaga becomes the new heart along the museum’s spine, illuminated by a large oculus. The dry assembly system will reduce construction time, ensuring that the museum can run normally during the process.
Towers. Four Details
Human predisposition to observe from above goes back to the origin of our species and, although as a survival mechanism it is no longer so precious to us, we still value the pleasure of rising to obtain better views, because this simple act brings us a feeling of control over the territory and of evasion from the dangers found at ground level. Wood and metal, together and separately, are the materials that have made it possible to build the four towers presented in the following pages, all located in natural landscapes, some discreetly and others with the intention of being seen, and considering the ascent as a crucial part of the experience or enabling quick access to a vantage point.
Ábalos + Sentkiewicz
Envisaged as an architectural prototype based on the equalization of the Form/Matter/Flow relationship, the PLANTA project is organized in thermodynamic key to achieve a triple pro- gram: museum, thermal machine, and observatory, simultaneously displaying the material systems that support its business activity, its art collection, and the ecological systems it is based on. This ‘machine’ of 7,500m2, built with materials extracted from the gravel pit, passively manages radiation, lighting, and ventilation. Its synthetic character, at the same time programmatic, performative, and material, seeks to connect the times and cultures of the place using the media and iconographies present there.
Calder Stories. Centro Botín
Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and with an exhi- bition design by Renzo Piano, the show ‘Calder Stories’ covers five decades in the career of Alexander Calder (1898-1976), unveiling lesser known facts about the work of the American author, like his collaboration with important architects, choreographers, and composers, and does so through a wide variety of works, ranging from large public commissions to innovative stage proposals, and includes projects never done. Organized by the Botín Centre of Santander with the Calder Foundation in New York, the exhibition follows the creative process of the artist and offers the opportunity to see works that had never been displayed before.
Thomas Jorion. Majestic Ruins
Thomas Jorion (France, 1976), is a self-taught photographer based in Paris, who travels around the world with his 4×5′′ large-format analog camera, searching for ancient and once majestic architectures currently abandoned and in ruins, and photographing them. In 2013, the publishing house La Martinière published Silencio, compiling a large part of the snapshots taken to date. Between 2013 and 2016 Jorion focused his exploration on the former French colonies, giving rise to the series ‘Vestiges d’Empire’ and to a second book. Since then, he has been working on ‘Veduta,’ a project of almost ten years in which he portrays 18th and 19th century palaces, gardens, and villas from all over Italy.
