FALA. New Language
After starting out in Basel, Tokyo and New York, collaborating with Harry Gugger, SANAA, and Toyo Ito, among others, the Portuguese architects Filipe Magalhães and Ana Luisa Soares and the Swiss Ahmed Belkhodja founded fala atelier in Porto, from where they use pieces from their own elementary and spatial vocabulary to build an intuitive and optimistic architecture that fuses languages, references, and formal gestures to create spaces that are complex and at the same time clear and coherent. An essential part of their design process, the drawings and collages, highly precise and filled with oneiric beauty, evoke the almost childlike innocence of naïf painting, as the ten projects that follow show.
Museo Carmen Thyssen. Renovation and Extension
In the Baix Empordà county in Girona, in the heart of the Costa Brava, the Monastery of Sant Feliu de Guíxols is a Benedictine building that has undergone several refurbishments since it was built in the 10th century, so it gathers elements from different periods and styles. The Madrid architects Nieto Sobejano will be in charge of refurbishing the monastery, extending it with a new building, in close contact with the surrounding gardens. The new volume is for the Catalan painting collection of Carmen Thyssen, and will hold joint exhibitions organized with the museums of Málaga and Madrid. The winning project in the competition and the four shortlisted proposals are presented in the following pages.
Arquitectura biodigital. Building with Nature
Aware of the footprint we are leaving on the planet and the need to establish more balanced relationships between built fabric, environment, and human beings, as much architects and designers as researchers and professors are looking more towards nature in the search for new solutions. Conceived as experimen- tal laboratories in which the use of materials based on living organisms is combined with new cybernetic techniques, algorithms, parametric models, and variation, mutation and hybridation principles, the following six projects offer an innovative vision of architecture in which biology and genetics are integrated with advanced digital technology.
David Chipperfield Architects. Kunsthaus Zürich
The Kunsthaus Zürich, built in 1910 by Karl Moser (1860-1936), is situated on Heimplatz, in the city center. The existing museum is to be expanded with a building designed by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin. The new exten- sion will go up on the opposite side of the square, connected to the Kunsthaus by an underpass. Clearly geometric, and inspired by the traditional stone facades of the city, the volume of the extension defines two new public spaces: an urban square to the south and an arts garden to the north, and will form, together with the historic building and the neighboring Schauspielhaus, ‘a gateway to the arts’ leading to the university campus north of the city.
