A hairdressing saloon in Tainan (Taiwan)

The special part of this project was that the house was previously a restaurant. It was quite an interesting challenge for us to redefine this well-situated, yet old and plain-looking ex-restaurant and transfer it into a brand-new hair salon.

With indoor and outdoor floor plans of roughly 136 square meters, their first thought was to separate the interior space into 2 parts. Musen Concept decided to utilize the original arched wall as a subtle dividing line in the house, assigning different functional areas accordingly into two spaces. With this dividing line, a square circulation in the salon was formed as the highlight of floor planning. Daylighting was achieved by opening the space up and using properly designed windows. Musen Concept also used metal ornaments to create coherence between these two spaces.
Their client hoped the design to be simple and clean, with gray and white as the fundamental colors and some plants as embellishment. Musen Concept then rearranged the design of massing, using a great amount of light-colored concrete. Also, to make it visually softer and smoother, they included curves in the facade. White is our choice as the main color inside the salon. To connect different areas of the interior space as a whole, we arranged shapes of circles and curves, bringing up the thorough image of the salon. To emphasize the exquisiteness of the salon, we used metal ornaments with gold paint finish to stress the details of space, magnifying the hair cutting area and making it enjoyable and comfortable for customers. The other side of the salon was designed for staffs to prepare, rest and check customers out. Musen Concept hoped to make efficient use of space without losing its conformity.
